How much is a taxi from the airport to the city centre?

City taxis can't pick up at the airport. Authorised airport taxis sell tickets at booths in the arrivals halls, priced by zone and by company. Going the other way, a taxi libre from the Zócalo or Polanco to the airport goes by the meter; the airport page lists typical fares.

Is it safe to hail a taxi in the street?

The usual advice is to take a taxi from a sitio stand, call a radio taxi or use an app, especially at night. They cost a little more than a taxi libre but you know the car and the driver.

Are tips expected?

Not for taxis. Rounding up the fare is common but not expected.

Is there a night surcharge?

Yes: from 23:00 to 6:00 every type of taxi charges 20% more.
